Our very own James Campbell
The late James Campbell W.S. MBE of Saltcoats, was
Scotland's oldest practising solicitor. A former First
Lieutenant in the Royal Navy whose late brother Kenneth
became a World War II hero, Mr Campbell was one of
the few people in the country who can lay claim to
having been born, lived and then worked in the same
office for the best part of a century.
His early years were spent growing up at the family
home in Kerelaw, Stevenson. He was educated at the
Old Ardrossan Academy before graduating in law at
Edinburgh University in 1933 and joining his father's
firm, Jas Campbell and Co, the same year. One of six
children, Mr Campbell was also a joint town clerk
of Saltcoats, with his father and solely held a similar
part-time post to the Burgh of Stevenson - a position
which he continued to work in until the centralisation
of the local authorities. Mr Campbell was also and
Honorary Sheriff Substitute at Kilmarnock.
He retired at ninety years of age in January 2000
after more than six decades in the family business.
He passed away on his ninety-fourth birthday on 29th
January 2004 and will be very sadly missed by all
who knew him.
